Sun rail to Winter Park

Postby KevinT » Sun Oct 05, 2014 4:31 pm

We have been to Winter Park several times but always went by car with the resulting stress of negotiating the I4 at busy times and Downtown Orlando traffic and finding a suitable parking place in Winter Park.

This time we decided to let the train take the strain and go by rail. We drove to the Sun Rail terminal at Sandlake Road and parked up for free. The ticket machines are easy to understand and use. They are similar to the Oyster card system in London (ie. After purchasing the tickets you tap them on a terminal post at the boarding station and again at the destination station as you alight from the train to complete one journey)

The journey took around 25 minutes and was very reasonably priced at five dollars and fifty cents for two adults for the return trip. The journey is very relaxing, going through stations at the Florida Hospital and Church Street station areas then through suburban Orlando to Winter Park station which is set in the beautiful park area itself and within a very short walk of the town and shops. We looked around the shops on the Main Street, took the boat cruise around the lakes and canals and had time for a snack before returning to the station for an uneventful journey back to Sandlake Road to collect the car. All in all a relaxing but interesting day out.
The Sunrail trains are around every half an hour to Winter Park from Sandlake up to 9.30am with a couple of trains at lunchtime (around 11.00am and 1.45pm) with return trains at every half hour between 3pm to 7pm.

Something different! Would definitely do this again....perhaps up to Sanford next time? The Sunrail trains are very clean and quiet inside.

This sounds like a more relaxing way to get around and see some of the area without fighting the traffic... :D

Something we would never have thought of doing, but it sounds great!

Will put it on our 'list' too. Thanks Kevin. :D
