Afternoon tea at the Waldorf Astoria

Postby KevinT » Sun Oct 05, 2014 4:04 pm

Having not been able to make a reservation at Disneys Grand Floridian (so popular!) for afternoon tea, we opted to try the Waldorf Astoria (next to the Hilton at Disney)

As would be expected, the Waldorf is set in stunning grounds and having parked in the self park car park we set about finding the Peacock lounge in the Waldorf. Having been informed by a staff member of the easiest way to go we found ourselves in the conference center (in the midst of a full conference tea break :D ) Progressing from there to the Peacock lounge we were treated to a fine selection of small sandwiches, scones and cakes. Yum!

If you's worth noting that the best place to park (strangely enough) would seem to be the valet parking as this gets you directly in to the main entrance of the Waldorf. The self park area appears to serve mainly the conference center and is a fair walk from the main entrance. When we asked the lounge supervisor whether we could have the parking ticket validated (as is possible at many of the hotels to negate the parking charge) she seemed unsure whether she could do that with the self park ticket saying that normally guests have a yellow valet park ticket which apparently causes no problem. She advised us to ignore the parking charge machines and just go directly to the exit and use the intercom to explain that we had been visiting for afternoon tea and to quote her name. We did this and the ticket rejected saying that a fee of 18 dollars was payable  however after pressing the intercom button the gate immediately opened (presumably the staff member had contacted the gate security)

Well recommended as an alternative to the Grand Floridian for afternoon tea.

Can't say I would recommend the Grand Floridian Afternoon Tea. (We visited 2 years ago.)

Admittedly we arrived FIVE minutes late owing to the Floridian not being signposted (that we saw) on Disney property - only when we found out we had to go through the main ticket booths did we pick up signs. Anyway, the snappy greeter told us to wait, no smile, no nothing. The tea was good (I don't like tea so had Coke), the sandwiches were crusty (not acceptable if you ask me), the scone and cakes were okay but I've never seen such a tiny portion of clotted cream. TOTALLY unimpressed (as was Ted) so good to hear there is somewhere better - must add it to our website.

Thanks Kevin

Sounds lovely and somewhere outside of Disney. Forgot they had one next to Disney and thought you had been 't'other famous one'.
